Without judicial reform ‘Colombia would be a banana republic’: judge

A Colombian judge said that without judicial reform and investigations into the “” scandal, “Colombia would be a banana republic, like any country in Africa or beyond,” reported local media Thursday.

Speaking at an academic forum on judicial reform, President of the Administrative Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council Nestor Raul Correa expressed his admiration and support for high court judges’s investigations into political scandals such as parapolitics.

Correa further claimed, “If parapolitics had not been uncovered, [extradited ex-paramilitary commander Salvatore Mancuso] would be Minister of Culture.”

Parapolitics refers to an ongoing scandal in which Colombian officials have been accused of colluding with AUC paramilitaries.
