4 killed in west Colombia FARC attacks

Three students and one policeman were killed Sunday in two attacks by alleged FARC rebels in the west Colombian department of Choco.

The policeman was killed early Sunday morning in a guerrilla attack on the village of Beté.

The three students were killed on a river between department capital Quibdo and the town of Bojaya hours later, only a few miles from the attack on Beté.

According to reports, guerrillas opened fire at the civilians who were traveling the river by boat. Survivors of the attack told newspaper El Tiempo that the rebels opened fire after the captain of the boat refused a rebel command to stop.

The Choco ombudsman, Victor Raul Mosquera, told the newspaper the attacks apparently were carried out by the FARC’s 34th front.
