Week of Disarmament in Medellin

The first Week of Disarmament started Monday in Medellin, Colombia’s second biggest city.

Medellin’s authorities invite all its citizens to hand in weapons anonymously.

The Week of Disarmament is being organized by the Program Plan Disarmament of the Government’s Secretary which offers public discussions on the risks and impact of weapons in everyday life, and how to reduce and prevent gun violence.

Colombia’s second biggest city has seen increasing violence in 2009. 512 people were assassinated in Medellin between January and April. This is a 66 per cent rise compared to the same period last year.
