Man injured in Ibague hospital explosion dies

A security guard critically injured in the explosion at an Ibague hospital died on Tuesday, due to severe burns over 60% of his body and damage to his airways.

Bogota’s Simon Bolivar hospital, where 22-year-old Jose Augusto Castro was in intensive care, announced the young man’s death late Tuesday night.

Castro died from “burns covering more than 60% of his body, with deep lesions in the skin and burns throughout his airways,” a hospital press release stated.

Castro was transfered to the Bogota hospital along with nine others, after they were injured when a boiler exploded in an Ibague hospital Saturday.

Castro entered the burns unit of the Simon Bolivar hospital in a critical condition. Some of the other patients who arrived with him remain in a critical condition.

The patients were transfered from Ibague to Bogota because the Ibague Federico Lleras Acosta Hospital, located some 200 kilometers to the south-west of the capital, does not have a burns unit.
