US unfreezes $50 million for Plan Colombia

The U.S. government will unfreeze US$50 million in funding destined for Plan Colombia. The funding was frozen in 2007 due to human rights violations in Colombia.

Colombia’s deputy Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon said he was informed of the decision during a recent visit with President Alvaro Uribe to Washington.

Pinzon said the U.S. State Department will take the initiative before Congress.

The deputy Defense Minister said he thinks Colombia will have access to the $50 million before the end of the year.
