Uribistas confident about elections

Colombian congressman Roy Barreras, one of President Alvaro Uribe’s most loyal supporters, is confident that the administration’s policies will be continued after the presidential elections in May, either by former defense minister Juan Manuel Santos or by Uribe himself.

“The presidential elections will be held on May 7. There is still time for decisions to be made. We have time because President Uribe doesn’t need to hold a campaign, he has the majority support of Colombians,” Barreras told Colombia Reports.

Even if the Constitutional Court does not allow Uribe to run for a third term, Barrera’s party, despite not having time for an extensive campaign, will have the candidate that is most likely to win; former Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos, says Barreras.

“Luckily he is a well known man. He was an excellent finance minister, and as minister of defense was the man behind Operation Jaque. He is known in Colombia in a way that there will be no problems proposing him if necessary,” said the congressman.

Barreras stated that Colombian courts should reach a decision about whether or not President Alvaro Uribe will be able to seek a third term next week.
