Uribe will be candidate before the end of October: Santos

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will be joining the race for the 2010
Presidency before the end of October this year, departing Defense
Minister Juan Manuel Santos said Tuesday.

In an interview with Caracol Radio, Santos said the current President will make a decision before October about running for President again himself or take a step back to allow a new coalition to be formed to continue his ‘Democratic Security’ policy. Santos said he had a gut feeling that Uribe will want to run for the Presidency himself.

Santos announced his resignation Monday to be able to join the race for the 2010 Presidency, but reiterated that he himself will not run, until it is
certain what Uribe’s plans are. If Uribe decides to aspire a third
term, Santos will support his campaign.

The government has not yet announced who will take Santos’ place after his departure.
