Uribe turns Casa de Nariño into campaign center: opposition

Colombia’s opposition says President Alvaro Uribe is turning the
presidential palace into a campaign center for the 2010 elections and
want the Inspector General to start an investigation.

According to Liberal Party senator Juan Fernando Cristo, the president crossed the line when he invited presidential candidates, party chairmen and other coalition partners to the Casa de Nariño to discuss progress on the referendum needed for his own re-election.

Despite that the legal body to investigate the President is the House of Representatives’ Accusasions Committee, the Liberal wants the Inspector General’s Office to open an investigation.

“They can not think we will stay quiet while they are talking in the Casa de Nariño about how to do the candidacies, about how they will repeat the shameful episode of Yidispolitica. These are things that can not happen without the Inspector General being notified,” the opposition lawmaker told newspaper El Espectador.

Cristo wants Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez to investigate whether Uribe is getting involved in campaigning, which according to the constitution is not allowed.
