Cordoba’s defense lawyer has called for the investigation of former President Alvaro for the crime of psychological torture of victims of the wiretap scandal.
Luis Guillermo Perez, the lawyer for banned Liberal Party senator Piedad Cordoba, said in front of the congressional commission investigating the former president for possible involvement in the DAS wiretap scandal that it is necessary for the former head of state to be investigated for political persecution and psychological torture in relation to the psychological distress caused to the victims of the wiretap scandal.
Cordoba was banned from office for 18 years in 2010 for alleged ties to the FARC. During his presidency, Alvaro Uribe accused the ex-senator of having ties to the guerrillas.
Cordoba’s defense said there were “orders of terrorism, sabotage and defamation” and “you cannot only speak of wiretaps.”
President Uribe will speak in front of a House commission on Thursday afternoon, which is investigating him for possible involvement in the wiretap scandal in which former officials of Colombian intelligence agency DAS reportedly spied on political opponents, magistrates and human rights workers.
Congressman Yahir Acuña, one of three investigators, said that these types of crimes cannot be investigated by the congressional commission because they are in direct competition with the International Criminal Court (ICC).
