Uribe: senator probe scandal was setup

Colombian president Álvaro Uribe said Friday the scandal involving an
intelligence investigation into an opposition senator may be a set up
to harm the government’s ‘Democratic Security’ policy.

“I think it was a setup. Who comes up with the to send a memo to experienced and intelligent people about investigating a political party? Is it stupidity or malice? What is behind this? The need to hurt the government,” newspaper El Espectador quoted the President as saying.

“Who knows what political purpose there is to harm the government? Why? Who within the Government of Democratic Security would think of investigating a political party for its credo?” Uribe added.

The director of Colombia’s intelligence service DAS resigned Thursday after documents revealed the service was secretly shadowing opposition senator Gustavo Petro.
