Uribe knew about court wiretaps: former DAS official

Colombia’s former President Alvaro Uribe knew about the illegal wiretapping of the Supreme Court by state intelligence agency DAS, a former intelligence official said Thursday.

According to William Romero, the DAS’ fomer “human sources” chief and implicated in the wiretap scandal, he had a meeting with now-jailed counter-intelligence chief Fernando Tabares who said “I just came from the (presidential) palace and I am happy because the president was satisfied with the information he received about the supreme court of justice.”

Romero, in an interview with La M, did not say if Uribe personally told Tabares he was satisfied or Tabares was told the president was satisfied.

In earlier statements before the Inspector General, Tabares said that Uribe’s Chief of Staff Bernardo Moreno indicated that the president wanted to be informed on the activities of a number of Supreme Court magistrates. Moreno was then barred from holding public office for 18 years and is under criminal investigation by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Romero, investigated by the same entity, is hoping to receive benefits in exchange for his cooperation with justice.
