Uribe does not rule out senate candidacy

Colombia’s ex-President Alvaro Uribe has not closed the door on the possibility of running for a seat in his country’s senate, local media reported Wednesday.

Weekly Semana reported that the former president has not ruled out the possibility of submitting an application for a place in the Colombian senate as his supporters want.

“At this point in life I do politics without any aspiration. Many Colombians have said that my name should be presented in a Senate bid. I do not agree. I should devote to support new generations. Nevertheless, given the circumstances I can not close the debate. I can not close the doors,” said Uribe.

The former president, who can count on significant support among Colombians, has become increasingly critical of his successor, President Juan Manuel Santos, but is not allowed to run for the presidency again.
