Uribe: Bribery accusations are attempt to discredit govt

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said that he is not worried about the corruption allegations against him since he considers them part of an effort to “discredit” his government and send ministers to jail, Caracol Radio reported Wednesday.

The president called former congresswoman Yidis Medina, who is currently under house arrest for being bribed, she claims, to vote in favor of Uribe’s first re-election, an “unmitigated liar.”

Uribe says that Medina would not have declared herself guilty if she were not being paid to do so by other persons interested in her confession and its consequences for the Colombian president.

The scandal revolving around the ex-congresswoman has led to the coinage of the term “yidispolitica”, which refers to bribery cases allegedly involving members of the government.

The president’s statements follow the reopening of an investigation into alleged bribery by Uribe to gain support for his first re-election bid.
