Uribe aides called for questioning over illegal wiretaps

Four of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe’s closest aides were summoned to testify on the illegal wiretapping of political opponents of the government by state security agency DAS, local media reported Wednesday.

Former presidential adviser Jose Obdulio Gaviria, press secretary Cesar Mauricio Velasquez, the president’s communications adviser Jorge Mario Eastman, and Uribe’s judicial adviser Edmundo de Castillo were ordered to testify before prosecution investigators between August 11 and 17.

The men are suspected of involvement in the illegal wiretapping of Supreme Court magistrates, journalists, human rights workers and opposition politicians.
