Urban unemployment in Colombia rose to 13% in August

Urban unemployment in Colombia rose to 13.1% this August, compared with 11.4% this time last year.

According to a Reuters report on Wednesday, the Colombian Department of Statistics announced that in 13 major cities, unemployment in August had risen from where it stood in July at 12.8%.

This rise has been attributed to the global economic crisis and its affects on Colombian industry and commerce.

According to newspaper La Republica, the city with the most unemployed people remains Pereira, where the rate is 23.3%, followed by 19.4% in Popayan. The northwestern city of Bucaramanga has the lowest level of 9.5%.

Reuters also stated that the national level of unemployment throughout Colombia had risen by 0.5% against records from the same month last year.
