Urban militia attacks Medellin police station

Alleged members of a local gang have attacked a police station in Medellin, local media reported Sunday.

According to the reports, the alleged gang members threw a grenade at the police station in the eastern neighborhood of La Sierra, a long-time hotspot of paramilitary and militia violence.

Medellin newspaper El Colombiano reported that the attack left only material damage.

Police commissioner General Yesid Vasquez was quoted by newspaper El Tiempo as saying that the attack was carried out by the local “La Sierra” hang following the arrest of one of the leaders of the group.

La Sierra is one of 18 neighborhoods of the Comuna 8, which was militarized weeks ago following an upsurge in gang violence.
