US beat Colombia to survive in Davis Cup World Group

Colombia failed to secure a spot in next year’s Davis Cup World Group, losing 1-3 to the United States in a play-off contested in Bogota.

The U.S., who have not missed a year in the World Group since 1988, entered the third day leading 2-1.

The match between Santiago Giraldo and Mardy Fish, who both won their singles matches on Friday, could have gone either way. Fish took the lead twice but Giraldo went on to win the next set on both occasions.

In the fifth set, the Colombian had a chance to finish the match on his own service after breaking Fish in the 11th game, but the American recovered and broke back for 6-6.

Giraldo had two more breakpoints in the next game but lost both. Fish went on winning that game and broke his Colombian opponent in the next, 6-8.

The fifth match between Carlos Salamanca and Ryan Harrison, had become unnecessary and was halted due to rain.
