UK MP congratulates Santos on Colombia drug efforts

British politician Keith Vaz met President Juan Manuel Santos Thursday to show support for Colombia’s war on drugs.

The main topic of conversation between Vaz, who chairs an parliamentary committee advising the British government on home affairs, and President Santos, was the fight against drug trafficking.

Santos said that combatting the problem was not just a matter of national importance but that other countries, such as the UK and the United States, also had a vested interest in combatting the sale of illegal drugs.

Vaz, who has been a British Member of Parliament for nearly 25 years, said that he welcomed the efforts of Santos’ government to reduce the amount of drugs being trafficked to Great Britain. The Labour Party MP also congratulated the agencies involved.

Vaz claimed that the UK was Colombia’s closest ally in the European Union and that the two are in continued dialogue to combat the internal consumption of Colombian narcotics.

A reported 55% of drugs sold in the UK are produced in Colombia.
