Two die in Medellín landslide

An elderly couple was killed Saturday morning when a landslide hit
their home just outside Medellin. They are the 27th and 28th deadly
victims of this rainy season.

The landslide on the hills of San Antonio de Prado buried the house of the seventy-year-old Octavio Ramírez Mejía and his wife Rosa Julia. A third person was rescued from the rubble by a team of rescuers.

The heavy rains also caused emergencies in Neiva, the capital of the Huila department where an overflowing river destroyed several homes and forced hundreds of families to evacuate.

Colombian meteorologists warn that the rains may be worse throughout Holy week, a week when traditionally a lot of Colombians travel.

So far, the rainy weather has affected nearly 52 thousand people and caused emergencies in 23 of the country’s 32 departments.
