Colombian rowers aim for world record

Two Colombians will attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat to establish a new World Record.

Nicolas Carvajal Uribe and Rodrigo Ideus Forero will will start their 5,000 km journey in the Canary Islands on January 12 and will row towards Barbados.

“We are going to cross during a period of 40 to 90 days in which we will row for two hours and relax for two hours. On the boat we have navigation systems and every time we row, we make a note on a point of the GPS position, as the currents or winds change we will change the course of the boat if necessary to make sure we are going in the right direction,” Carvajal said, as RCN Radio reported.

The goal of the journey is to set a new World Record and to raise funds for an organisation in Bogota that helps poor children who don’t have access to proper education.

In preparation for their journey Carvajal and Ideus daily follow an intensive workout regime and are seeing a psychologist since their journey will also be a mental challenge.

Both men have been training for over a year. Ideus has represented Colombia in the Olympic Games for rowing.
