Two blasts, no injuries in northwestern Colombia

Two explosive devices detonated in the northwestern department of Antioquia Sunday, reported local media.

No injuries were reported in the town of Sabanalarga, where two explosions allegedly went off just hours apart. The first blast took place close to a military checkpoint but “did not cause any harm,” according to the commander of Antioquia’s police department, Colonel Jose Gerardo Acevedo.

The second explosion took place two hours later, detonating close to several parked minibuses, “causing damage to a bus and nearby houses, about five, but there were no injuries,” Acevedo said. He attributed the attacks to the FARC’s 36th Front, who remain active in the area.

“We know they [the FARC] are around here,” explained the town’s mayor, Carlos Arturo Henao Lopera, adding that security presence has increased in the region in recent weeks. “The police have always been here,” he said.

The FARC “wants to flaunt its 48 years [of existence], we in the northwest must be vigilant,” added Acevedo.
