Northeast-Colombia locals close road to demand better education, infrastructure

Residents of a small town in the northeast of Colombia have closed off the road connecting the northeast of Colombia with the rest of the country, demanding better education and infrastructure, reported newspaper El Colombiano Monday.

Residents began the protest at 11PM on Sunday by blocking an important road from Turbo to Apartado, towns located in the northeastern region of Colombia.

The protestors demanded that William Palacios, the mayor of their Nueva Granada municipality, make changes to better education and roads which access these parts of the region. The roads have been damaged by the rain since March of this year.

One of the situations which the protesters consider critical is the lack of a school building in the district of Siete de Agosto, where instead the children attend school in a cave.

According to El Colombiano, state agents arrived Monday morning, to try and stop the protest in order to clear the road.
