FARC leader sentenced to 34 years in prison in absentia

A Colombian court sentenced the FARC’s supreme commander, Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri, alias “Timochenko,” to 34 years in prison in absentia Wednesday for a 1999 attack that killed several civilians.

The court, located in the south-central department of Huila, said the FARC commander ordered the 1999 attack against which killed three civilians and injured nine more in the municipality of Gigante.

In mid-July, the FARC commander was sentenced to 40 years in prison in absentia by a judge in the department of Meta.

Timochenko took command of the FARC in November 2011, after his predecessor “Alfonso Cano” was killed by military forces in southwestern Colombia.
