Too many bodies for Colombian forensic labs

Authorities in Antioquia and Córdoba are digging up more remains of presumed paramilitary victims than the forensic labs can handle, reported El Heraldo.

Although the number of experts dedicated to identifying remains has been doubled, there are still backups. Medellín had to send 32 bodies to other areas.

Current techniques require three days to a month to make an identification, but only with some type of indicator.

Currently all labs are booked until Jan. 2009, but they should be busy for some time after that. Official estimates say the United Self Defense Forces of Colombia killed some 9,000 people. Many are buried in mass graves.
