“La Tomatina” is a three-day event where people, young and old, throw tomatoes at each other, dive in the juice of the vegetable and simply have a good time.

This year is the fifth anniversary of the event which is one hour away from Tunja, the capital of Boyaca. More than 20 tons of tomatoes are used for the battle each year.

“This is my first time in Colombia and I heard about ‘La Tomatina’ in Bogota, so I decided to travel with other friends from Ireland, Canada, Australia, England, United States, Estonia and Poland to Sutamarchan to have some fun”, Irishman Simon Evans told El Tiempo Monday.

The tomato crop has been an increasing business in Boyaca. 30 of its 123 municipalities grow 3000 tons of tomatoes each year.
