Supreme Court drops parapolitics case against former senator

The Supreme Court shleved the case against an ex-senator accused of having ties to the paramilitary organization AUC, Colombian media reported Wednesday.

The court found no evidence linking former Partido de la U. Senator Adriana Gutierrez to the AUC commander Ivan Roberto Duque, alias “Ernesto Baez.”

The Supreme Court launched the investigation into her relationship with the paramilitaries in early 2009 after a photo of the senator and a Caldas politician who was a paramilitary member surfaced.

Gutierrez subsequently resigned from the Senate although she did not specify her reasons.

Former congressman Rocio Arias testified that paramilitaries intimidated voters in Caldas to help elect Gutierrez. Investigators also found e-mails from the paramilitary leader to Gutierrez.
