A Spanish citizen kidnapped in south west Colombia has been found dead, local media reported on Friday.
According to Radio Santa Fe, Sergio Muniz Brioso was found dead in the south western department of Cauca.
Brioso had disappeared on June 5 in a hotel in Cali, capital of the Valle del Cauca department, while his body was discovered in a location known as El Mirador, one kilometre from the municipatlity of Corinto, in the department of Cauca.
Radio Santa Fe cite the inital police report, which states that Brioso, 28, a native of Asturias in northern Spain was killed by a gunshot to the head.
After Brioso’s inital disappearance, he was linked to drug traffickers in the region.
“What we know is that a Spanish citizen came to Cali and stayed in a down town hotel, from here he left for Santander de Quilichao in the company of two Colombian’s,” said the General Humberto Carreno Guatibonza, Director of Gaula police.
“When we went to inspect the hotel room in which he had stayed, we discovered several destroyed SIM cards, indicating that he wanted to delete evidence of text messages and phone calls,” added Guatibonza.
The director indicated that it was very likely that Brioso was in Colombia for illegal purposes.
“This hypothesis has been reached because we know that the two Colombian’s who accompanied the Spanish citizen to have a history of drug trafficking,” said Guatibonza.
Brioso’s abduction came a month after the police resuced two Spanish citizens held for 29 days in the northern department of La Guijira.
