Senator resigns over suspected paramilitary ties

Coalition Senator Jorge Visbal Martelo resigned Tuesday, two weeks after the
Prosecutor General announced it was investigating the politicians
for
alleged links to paramilitary death squads.

The senator is one of more than seventy Congressmen — mostly from President Alvaro Uribe’s coalition — investigated for having used paramilitary groups to intimidate voters and this way secure their way to the country’s national poltics arena.

Visbal Martelo will be replaced by party member Sergio Diaz Granados
