Senator suspended over notary scandal

Colombia news - Alirio Villamizar

Attorney General Alejandro Ordoñez suspended Senator Alirio Villamizar from his duties and opened a disciplinary investigation against him for his role in the notary scandal.

The suspension, which will last three months, is in place to prevent Villamizar from interfering in the disciplinary investigation brought against him, reports El Tiempo.

The senator turned himself in to authorities last week after the Supreme Court handed down a warrant for his arrest. He is being investigated for illegally receiving funds after 730 million pesos were found at his Bucaramanga residence, allegedly a bribe to buy his vote for President Alvaro Uribe’s reelection.
