Senate approves political reform

The first commission of Colombia’s Senate approved the political reform
as proposed by the government, skipping only a few controversial
amendments and without votes by the opposition.

According to the government, the political reform is to reduce criminal or paramilitary influence in Congress and includes measures that should avoid scandals like that of ‘parapolitics’.

The opposition boycotted the vote, claiming the government and coalition had used ‘abusive and anti-democratic practices’ to have the reform approved.
