Security out in force for Easter celebrations in Bogota

Almost 40,000 members of the security forces will be watching over Bogota during Easter celebrations this coming weekend, Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno announced on Tuesday.

Approximately 19,800 policemen and 18,750 soldiers will be on hand to guarantee security during the religious holiday in the capital.

Popular religious and tourist sites such as Cerro de Guadalupe, Cerro de Monserrate and the main cathedral in Bogota will be heavily policed to ensure the large number of visitors can come and go safely.

Bus terminals, El Dorado airport and busy routes will also be heavily patrolled to handle the mass exodus of holidaymakers.

Authorities predict that over 500,000 locals will leave Bogota by the end of the week, even though the government has warned against travelling due to the heavy rains which have closed off some towns and damaged roads.

Transport authorities predict that over 425,000 cars will leave Bogota over the Easter period, and most will attempt to return on Sunday or Monday.

Air traffic will increase 7.5% over the Easter period, with around 750 flights coming and going from the capital every day, said authorities.
