Santos suggests new prosecutor general candidates

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Wednesday presented three new candidates for the office of prosecutor general to the Supreme Court.

The candidates are former Defense Minister Juan Carlos Esguerra, former prosecutor Carlos Gustavo Arrieta and former Senator Viviane Morales. According to Santos, the candidates meet the requirements of Colombia’s constitution to hold this office.

The Supreme Court has for many months failed to elect a prosecutor general from the shortlist made by former President Alvaro Uribe. Several candidates were replaced by Uribe in the process after criticism that the shortlist contained no competent candidate.

The Americas director of NGO Human Rights Watch in October said he was “concerned” about the 15-month delay in the election of a new prosecutor general.
