Santos’ popularity remains high: Poll

A new poll showed Thursday that Colombian President Santos enjoys high popularity in general, but that the population is split regarding his performance on unemployment and security.

The poll was conducted by the Centro Nacional de Consoltoria, a private Colombian research company. Santos scored well generally, with 84% of respondents stating that they had a positive image of the president, and 83% approving of his current management of the government. 78% answered that they thought the country was headed in a good direction.

Santos also did well on a number of specific issues, with 73% of respondents approving of his general handling of the economy and 76% affirming that Santos has not neglected the poor since arriving in office.

Santos showed weakness however on the issues of security and unemployment. Only 47% of respondents said that they approved of Santos’ efforts to reduce unemployment. When asked whether Santos had made the country safer, 42% answered yes and 50% responded no.

Santos also performed relatively weakly on the issue of corruption, with only 62% approving of his efforts to prevent corruption.
