Colombia’s largest rebel group FARC will be eliminated in four to six
years if the Colombian military is able to keep up the pressure on the
guerrillas, vice-President Fransisco Santos told Spanish press agency Efe Tuesday in the Japanese capital
Tokyo.
According to the vice-President, the escape of lawmaker Oscar Tulio Lizcano and his captor shows “a weakness” and also that “they are having a complicated time”. “This doesn’t mean they are not dangerous or that they’re not able to maintain themselves, because they have money of drug trafficking,” he added.
Santos said that if the Colombian government “continues with this strong policy for four or six years more, they are defeated.”
The Colombian Government, helped with billions of dollars from it’s ally the U.S., has known to significantly improve the security situation in large parts of Colombia and diminish the grip of the 44-year old insurgency group on the country. Because of the violence between 2.5 and 4 million Colombians are currently displaced.
