Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez will sign an agreement to improve the countries’ cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
This was announced by Colombia’s Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin who was in the Venezuelan capital Caracas Wednesday to meet with the socialist country’s Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro.
According to Holguin, Santos will meet Chavez in the second week of March to sign a joint operational plan to fight drug trafficking.
In November, the Colombian and Venezuelan Defense Ministers met to explore possibilities to improve collaboration in the fight against drugs.
The United States have frequently criticized Venezuela’s government on its inability to combat drug trafficking. According to a 2009 report, the annual flow of Colombian cocaine through Venezuela quadrupled between 2004 and 2007.
