San Andres plane accident kills one, injures 114

One person was killed and 114 were injured when a ray of lightening struck a plane as it was landing on the Caribbean Colombian island of San Andres, a Colombian Civil Aviation Authorities press release confirmed.

The accident occurred at 1.40AM Monday local time. The lightening bolt struck Aires flight 8250 during a storm, causing it to collide with the runway and splintering the aircraft’s fuselage into three pieces.

120 passengers and six crew members were on board the Boeing 737, which departed Bogota at 12:07AM. 114 received minor injuries and six were unhurt. Another six were transported to a local hospital for surgery on the injuries they sustained.

San Andres is 191 kilometers off the coast of Nicaragua. The island is a popular destination for Colombian vacationers.
