The Zipaquira Salt Cathedral, a popular tourist destination in Cundinamarca, has been illuminated with a brilliant new lighting system, reported newspaper El Tiempo on Wednesday.
“This type of lighting is part of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, New York buildings like the Empire State, and other attractions in England, the United States, Belgium, Holland, Spain, and New Zealand,” explained Cundinamarca Mayor Jorge Enrique Gonzalez.
The new system sheds a whole new light on the salt monument, and has the capacity of creating more than 1.67 million different colors. The electric system is located 590 feet below ground, and allows for varied light ambiance in each of the different zones of the cathedral. At the end of the tour, visitors will also be wowed by the largest LED screen in Latin America at a giant size of 1,312 square feet.
The light system installation began in January, and the total cost of the project was $2.4 million. The cathedral is located in the town of Zipaquira, located 30 miles north of Bogota. For pictures of the salt cathedral in all of it’s technicolored glory, click here.
