Rise in traffic violations in Colombia: police

Colombia’s Transport Police announced an alarming increase in the number of traffic offenses in the country, reported television channel RCN on Monday.

In January alone over 100,000 drivers have already been fined throughout Colombia, with the most critical areas for traffic violations being the country’s capital Bogota and the western department of Valle del Cauca. Colombian police will maintain controls in order to avoid a further increase in the number of offenders.

The police criticized drivers for their open disregard for road signs and traffic regulations. Wrong-way driving, speeding and performing u-turns in areas where they aren’t allowed, are among the most frequent offenses.

Such reckless behavior, police says, explains the high number of penalties in the first 25 days of 2010.
