Restrepo to be asked to resign: El Espectador

Members of the Partido de la U faction in the House Tuesday will ask party
president Luis Carlos Restrepo to resign, newspaper El
Espectador reported Monday.

The frontman of the coalition party came under heavy criticism after he asked House chairman German Varon Cotrino to be disqualified as the person to pick the Respresentatives for a commission that will have to vote for the referendum that allows a re-election of President Alvaro Uribe.

According to the De la U leader, Varon’s opposition to the referendum makes him unable to form the commission.

Restrepo’s attack on Varon already led to public criticism by members of his own party. Representatives say the President never consulted with the bench before entering the attack.

Several Representatives will ask Restrepo to resign when the partypoliticians meet Tuesday, the newspaper reported.
