Republican representative calls for implementation of Colombia FTA

Republican representative Dave Camp calls on the Obama administration to push the pending free trade deal with Colombia.

“The first step to getting back on the field is passing these trade agreements. It is time for the President to submit the three pending trade agreements to Congress for their consideration within six months,” said Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) in a report from newspaper Detroit News.

Camp and his supporters hope that Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address will bring a schedule for the ratification of the FTA.

The deal was signed in by former leaders George W. Bush and Alvaro Uribe in 2006 but has yet to be ratified by U.S. Congress.

Opponents of signing the FTA with Colombia say that the country needs to improve workers’ safety and rights before the US can make the deal.

Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon said Friday if the U.S. does not ratify the FTA Colombia will not “sit down and cry.”
