Due to the massive wave of travelers expected during Holy Week to the Colombian capital, the 100,000 strong police force of Bogota will be supported by 2,220 additional officers, reports el Tiempo.
National traffic police estimates an 8% increase in the number of cars and buses entering and leaving the city compared to last year’s Holy Week, and will probably reach 5.9 million by next weekend.
As a consequence, security will be increased on roads, as well as in major areas of the city, including shopping malls, parks and churches.
Colonel of Bogota’s Metropolitan Police, Gildardo Pico plans to have at least six permanent agents in the main pilgrimage sites such as the Cerro Monserrate.
The major religious center of Colombia, Monserrate, will be patroled by 112 men in order to prevent pilgrims from ascending the steps, since the risk of landslide remains high on the new footpath to the summit.
To encourage the use of public transport, funicular and teleferic prices will be discounted during the holiday period.
