Reggaeton star J Balvin is public’s favorite at awards show

J Balvin swept all the publicly-voted awards at the Nuestra Tierra Awards 2011, Nuestra Tierra Awards 2011, which took place Thursday in Bogota.

The reggaeton singer demonstrated his evident popularity by picking up the publicly-voted awards for Best Artist and Best Song, for his track “Sin Compromiso,” at the award ceremony held in Jorge Eliecer Gaitan Theater.

In what perhaps offers a glimpse into his special relationship with his fans, he also won Best Tweeter, while his supporter’s won the Best Fan Club award, presumably for more than just voting him to victory at the ceremony.

The Nuestra Tierra Awards aim to recognize the best of Colombian talent, with international superstar Shakira winning Best Colombian Music Video for “Loca.”

ChocQuibTown’s hit anthem “De Donde Vengo Yo” earned gongs for Best Urban Interpretation of the Year and Best Folk Interpretation of the Year. The trio, who also won Best Urban Solo or Group Artist of the Year, stated their opposition to the planned exploitation of rain forest in their native department of Choco as they accepted their awards.

Pop artist Santiago Cruz took home the big ones; Best Song, Best Album, and Best Artist, while Jiggy Drama won Best New Artist.

There was also time to pay homage to Helenita Vargas and Sonia Osorio, two Colombian cultural legends who have passed away this year.
