Rains cause chaos at Bogota airport

Some 4,000 travelers were stranded on Bogota airport El Dorado Friday after Colombian airline Avianca canceled 39 domestic flights because of heavy rains.

According to airport authorities, the extreme rains caused the air strips to flood as the drainage for the airport was overloaded. The airport was only able to use one of its runways.

Avianca carried out an emergency plan to attend to the thousands of stranded passengers.

Extreme rainfall has caused emergency situations all over Colombia and forced the national government to declare a national disaster as more than 150 people were killed by floods or landslides, at least 1.2 million people have damages to their house or land and dozens of roads are blocked.
