Singer Mary Luz Grajales, known to fans as the queen of the corridos prohibidos, or prohibited ballads, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident, tabloid El Espacio reported Tuesday.
Grajales was the most famous interpreter of the ballads of Colombia’s underworld, with songs like “La Propia Prepago,” about being a prostitute, and “La Celda 23,” about life in jail.
According to the tabloid, the singer was hit by a car on Monday in the capital Bogota and died of her injuries in a local hospital.
Corridos prohibidos is a musical genre popular across Latin America, and deals with the life of drug traffickers, paramilitaries, guerrillas, and prostitutes.
