Medellín’s former mayor Luis Pérez Gutiérrez accuses current mayor
Alonso Salazar of having sought the support of AUC head ‘Don Berna’ for
his 2007 election.
Pérez Gutiérrez did not specify how he thought the current mayor of Colombia’s second largest city was helped by the paramilitaries, but states the results of the election had an unexpected result. He says pre-election polls predicted a very different outcome.
The former mayor asked a group of lawyers to investigate the elections, he told W Radio.
Salazar denies the accusations and wants his predecessor to file charges.
The current is known to have been friendly with Antonio ‘Job’ Lopez, a paramilitary mediator and close ally of ‘Don Berna’. The mayor always insisted he broke off contact when it became known ‘Job’ was still involved in crime.
The paramilitary mediator was assassinated a few months ago in a fancy restaurant in Medellín.
