Prosecutor wants court to send suspended Bogota mayor to jail

Colombia’s prosecutor general announced Tuesday that she will ask the court to send suspended Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno to jail while awaiting trial for his alleged responsibility in a major corruption scandal.

Prosecutor General Viviane Morales told reporters that she will file charges against the unpopular Moreno that include embezzlement and extortion.

The mayor is currently suspended from office and is accused of having demanded commissions for the granting of public works projects.

The scandal also implicates the city’s comptroller and the mayor’s brother, suspended Senator Ivan Moreno.

The mayor has denied all accusations and said he is the victim of a conspiracy to discredit him.
