Prosecutor General wants former presidential candidate back in jail

Colombia’s Prosecutor General will appeal the acquittal of former
presidential candidate Alberto Santofimio Botero, suspected of having a
political rival murdered.

Botero initially was sentenced to jail, because according to testimonies by a prominent member of Pablo Escobar’s Medellín cartel, had ordered the death of his political rival Luis Carlos Galán in 1989. A Bogotá court then revoked the sentence in October 2008, because there was a lack of evidence.

The Prosecutor General wants to take the case to the Supreme Court, Colombia’s highest judicial body to prove the former Liberal Party senator had in deed ordered Escobar peronsally to kill Galán.
