Profits up at Colombian conglomerates in 1st 3 quarters

Three major Colombian business groups have posted good results for the first three quarters of 2010, financial newspaper Portafolio reported on Wednesday.

Grupo Aval, a financial holding firm that controls Banco de Bogota amongst others, registered a net profit of $420 millon. This marks a 25.2% increase on its performance in the first three quarters of 2009.

Promigás, a conglomerate of fifteen gas, electricity and telecoms firms, took a profit of $111 million in the third quarter of 2010. In the corresponding period of the previous year, the group, whose operations span Colombia, Peru and Panama, had earned $85 million.

Energy investment group SIE,which controls major oil and gas company Terpel, posted net profits of $66 million during the first nine months of the year. Improved sales (from $2.4 billion to $2.7 billion) helped the group to better the $63 million pesos profit taken in the first three quarters of 2009.
