Poverty in Colombia decreases: study

Poverty in Colombia decreased slightly, a study shows. Between 43 and 44 percent of Colombians officially live below the poverty line.

The decrease is due to the economic growth Colombia enjoyed until 2007, the researchers of government agency National Planning, independent research institute Fedesarollo, the World Bank and a number of universities say.

According to their study, poverty decreased from 45.1 in 2006 to in between 43 and 44 percent. Reporting media do not say if the study was conducted before or after the global financial crisis made unemployment skyrocket in Colombia. Despite the reported decrease of poverty, the researchers warn that poverty is still higher than eight years ago.
