Politician assassinated in north Colombia

Politician Jorge Medrano has been assassinated in Monteria, the capital of the northern department of Cordoba, El Espectador reports.

According to the local community, the homicide comes after a series of threats made against the administration in the municipality of Canalete, Cordoba where Medrano was a native.

At this time the crime is being attributed to emerging gangs in the area though there are currently no official suspects.

Senator Antonio Correa, who was a personal friend of Medrano, has asked national police chief General Oscar Naranjo and Prosecutor General Viviane Morales to get involved in the investigation.
